Chiropractic for Back Pain

What Does Chiropractic for Back Pain Involve?spinepain
A chiropractor first takes a medical history, performs a physical examination, and may use lab tests or diagnostic imaging to determine if treatment is appropriate for your back pain.

The treatment plan may involve one or more manual adjustments in which the doctor manipulates the joints, using a controlled, sudden force to improve range and quality of motion. Many chiropractors also incorporate nutritional counseling and exercise/rehabilitation into the treatment plan. The goals of chiropractic care include the restoration of function and prevention of injury in addition to back pain relief.

What Are the Benefits and Risks of Chiropractic Care?
Spinal manipulation and chiropractic care is generally considered a safe, effective treatment for acute low back pain, the type of sudden injury that results from moving furniture or getting tackled. Acute back pain, which is more common than chronic pain, lasts no more than six weeks and typically gets better on its own.

Research has also shown chiropractic to be helpful in treating neck pain and headaches. In addition, osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia may respond to the moderate pressure used both by chiropractors and practitioners of deep tissue massage

People who have osteoporosis, spinal cord compression, or inflammatory arthritis, or who take blood-thinning medications should not undergo spinal manipulation. In addition, patients with a history of cancer should first obtain clearance from their medical doctor before undergoing spinal manipulation.

All treatment is based on an accurate diagnosis of your back pain. The chiropractor should be well informed regarding your medical history, including ongoing medical conditions, current medications, traumatic/surgical history, and lifestyle factors. Although rare, there have been cases in which treatment worsened a herniated or slipped disc, or neck manipulation resulted in stroke or spinal cord injury. To be safe, always inform your primary health care provider whenever you use chiropractic or other pain relief alternatives.

You Can Take Charge of Your Health

Responsibility – You Can Take Charge of Your Health

Responsibility – Please read the following definitions prior to reading the essay.
Responsibilitylegally or ethically accountable for the care and welfare of another.
Primary – occurring first in time or sequence; earliest; original.
Cause – that which produces an effect, or result or consequence.
Determine – to decide or settle conclusively and authoritatively.
Perspective – any of various techniques for representing three-dimensional objects and depth relations on a two-dimensional surface; any picture in perspective.
Susceptible – readily subject to an influence, agency or force.
Cope – to contend or strive.
Dysfunction – disordered or impaired functioning of a bodily system or organ.
Predicament – a troublesome, embarrassing situation or ludicrous situation.

You are personally responsible for your own health. To be responsible for one’s own health requires that one shift his/her attitude to one of ownership of the condition of one’s body. It assumes that the individual is willing to consider himself or herself the primary cause over their health.
To consider oneself the cause of their health is to assume that one’s own actions determine how healthy one will be. With this perspective, the individual shift from blaming either the environment or their body for the condition of their health.

For example, if one smokes cigarettes for ten years and developed heart disease or lung cancer, they are responsible for the fact that their own bad habits caused the problem. If we recognize that a person must first be susceptible to disease before one gets it, then our bad habits can lead us to be susceptible to colds, ulcers, infections, etc. If one fails to eat properly, cope successfully with emotional stress, exercise and do those things that promote an elevated resistance to body dysfunction, then you, in effect can cause your own ill health.

This is also true when one develops allergies, multiple sclerosis or diabetes, seemingly out of nowhere. Such conditions, however, do not develop out of nowhere. Although the symptom complex from which the disease is named may arise quickly, the body must first go through several stages of breakdown before the condition manifest. Physical, chemical or emotional stress beyond the body’s ability to cope leads to neurological imbalance, then body dysfunction and lowered resistance and ultimately symptoms and disease. In the case of a traumatic injury from an accident, you are responsible for taking those steps to regain your health.

Being responsible for one’s own health would require the individual to move towards a lifestyle that promotes their own well-being. Any loss of health would lead the individual to analyze their own conduct physically and mentally that may have led to their current predicament. obviously, the way to prevent ill health is to deal successfully with life’s stresses as well as removing neurotic imbalance before it causes lowered resistance and dysfunction.

Whiplash, Neck Injuries & Chiropractic Pt2

Whiplash, Neck Injuries & Chiropractic Pt2

whiplash2
Medical Care
An individual who has been in an accident should first make sure that there is no life-threatening emergency-broken bones, bleeding or hemorrhage, internal organ damage, serious contusions or abrasions, shock and other damage. This is the specialty of emergency medicine, which does its best work when dealing with trauma or accidental injury. After the patient is out of immediate danger, and when it is safe to do so, their spine desperately needs to be checked by a doctor of chiropractic for life-threating spinal damage, called the vertebral subluxations complex.
This is essential because many whiplash suffers live in pain for years after the injury, forced to survive on painkillers, muscle relaxants and various therapies including surgery because the spinal damage a doctor of chiropractic can correct has not been eliminated. In many cases a visit to the chiropractor may give great relief safely, quickly and without drugs or surgery.
Chiropractic Care
Not only whiplash but any kind of accident may cause the vertebral subluxation complex where the vertebrae (spinal bones) are out of proper alignment and “impinging” or irritating spinal nerves. Painkillers, muscle relaxers, sedatives or physical therapy can not re-align the vertebrae and relieve the nervous system from pressure. What is needed is chiropractic care (spinal adjustment0 to realign the spinal column.

Whiplash, Neck Injuries & Chiropractic Pt1

Whiplash, Neck Injuries & Chiropractic

Of the millions of people who visit doctors of chiropractic each year, a large number have had whiplash injuries. Whiplash injuries occur when a person’s spine, usually their neck, was hurt by being unexpectedly or suddenly thrown very quickly in one direction and then in the opposite direction. Your might say the head is “whipped around” on the neck.
Whiplash is one of the most common consequences of auto accidents; it is estimated that 15% -30% of car occupants will suffer neck pain.
In almost all whiplash-type injuries, the spine is thrown first in one direction and then is pulled in the opposite direction because the muscles react to the initial injury by pulling or rebounding in the opposite direction. They rebound can and often does cause injury to your soft tissues-muscles, ligaments, tendons and other tissues. Occasionally a whiplash injury can rest from side to side motion of the neck, also called left and right lateral hyperflexion.
There is more to whiplash than being thrown forward and backward. Usually the head is turned to the right or left a little when an accident occurs and this can complicate the effects for he injury.
Whiplash Damage
Whiplash can be mild to severe and can range from rapid healing to slow healing to long-term chronic pain and impairment. it can cause serious problems because it can cause long-term damage. Studies show that a large percentage of whiplash suffers, from 50% to as much as 88% may continue to supper pain and some amount of disability for years after the accident.
Spinal Cord Damage
Depending on the severity of the accident, whiplash damage can range from barely noticeable stiffness to death. A worst case scenario occurs in a small minority of cases where there is actual bone fracture and spinal cord damage causing paralysis and death.
Whiplash Symptoms
Whiplash symptoms may start as neck soreness or stiffness, perhaps accompanied by a headache immediately or wishing a few hours of the accident. Along with these symptoms there may be pain and/or numbness, tingling, or a pins-and-needles feeling between the shoulder blade, arm and hand.
Some people may experience ear ringing, dizziness or even hearing loss. Sometimes the eyes can be affected and there may be pain behind the eyeballs, blurred vision, sensitivity to light or other visual symptoms. Occasionally, there may be tearing or running of the nose.

Post Concussion Syndrome
A concussion may accompany a whiplash. It occurs from a violent shaking of the head where the brain is thrown around against the skull– similar to scrambling an egg without damage the shell. Concussion symptoms may include headache, restlessness, irritability, insomnia, moodiness, depression and emotional “jitters” that may last for hours or days after the accident. This grouping of symptoms is now being called Post Concussion Syndrome(PCS).

Neck Problems Pt3

neckproblems_2The Orthodox Medical Approach

The standard medical approach to neck pain is painkillers, muscle relaxers and/or tranquilizers. If the pain doesn’t subside, an orthopedic surgeon may be consulted and more drastic treatment-cortisone or other injections -may be administered. When should the physician resort to surgery? “As a last resort.” Clearly, a patient should not consent to anything as drastic as neck surgery without first consulting another healer- in particular, a chiropractor!
The Role of the Chiropractor
When the spinal bones are off center, the small opening through which the nerves travel may become narrower causing irritation to the cervical nerve roots and may also cause pressure upon the spinal cord. Chiropractic spinal care counters the effect of stress and unnatural wear and tear by relieving your neck of the vertebral subluxation complex and restoring proper movement to the spinal column.
Chiropractic & Neck Injury
Since most medical doctors and physical therapists are not trained to locate and correct vertebral subluxations, an accident victim will leave the emergency room with as many subluxations as they had when they entered. Without chiropractic spinal care, a neck injury might continue to cause silent damage for decades before the problem is recognized; by that time it may be too late for a complete recovery.
Get A Spinal Checkup
Everyone with a spine needs to have it checked periodically by a chiropractor.Just as a periodic dental checkup is necessary to keep your teeth healthy, so a chiropractor spinal checkup is necessary to ensure a nervous system that is free from vertebral subluxations permitting you to experience greater healing and well-being.

Neck Problems Pt 1

Your Amazing Incredible Neck

Inside your neck are your neck bones (cervical vertebrae), spinal and cranial nerves, spinal cord, blood vessels, glands(including the thyroid and parathyroids), voice box (larynx), esophagus, trachea, brain stem, and many muscles ligaments and other structures. With all that, it’s still able to gracefully balance your head and turn, tilt and bend without damaging its vital “occupants.”
That’s amazing because if your neck’s functions are interrupted for even a few seconds you’d lose consciousness and begin to die.
neck_pain_2The Cervical Spine
Cervix is the Latin word for neck, meaning a constricted area (the uterus and urinary bladders have a neck or cervix too). Your seven small neck bones are called cervical vertebrae, numbered C-1 to C-7.
Inside your cervical vertebrae lies your spinal cord, a continuation of the brain down your neck and back. Protection of the spinal cord is extremely important because an injury to it can result in instant paralysis or death.
Your vertebrae are connected to each other by discs, ligaments and tendons that help give the neck its shape (the cervical curve). Between the vertebrae are opening where nerves, blood vessels, lymphatic vessels, fat and connective tissues are found.

Neck Problems
With all the neck’s complexity, it should come as no surprise that neck problems are common. They may develop suddenly from a trauma such as a whiplash or fall, or slowly as a result of spinal imbalance, vertebral subluxations, emotional stress or bad posture.
Damaged or irritated neck nerves can cause more than neck pain. Pain in the face, shoulder, arm, wrist, hand and fingers, as well as reduced neck motion may also occur. Other neck problems include headaches, vision difficulties, dizziness, ringing in the ears, decreased attention span, learning and memory impairments, nasal problems tongue and throat problems.
The more serious neck problems such as fracture, dislocation or severe tissue damage can be fatal if not given emergency medical care. Most other neck problems, however, although not life-threatening, can impair your health if not corrected.

Neck Pain
Pain in the neck can be caused by irritation, inflammation, injury or infection. Pain in the neck, shoulder, arm, hand or head “most frequently results from irritation of cervical nerve roots in the region of the intervertebral foramen, encroachment of the vascular supply as it courses through the vertebral canal, or invasion of the cord in the spinal canal.

“Pinched” Nerves Pt 4 Correct Your “Pinched” Nerves

nerveandspineCorrect Your “Pinched” Nerves

Only doctors of chiropractic are able to analyze the spinal column for “pinched” nerves or vertebral subluxations. Using the art of the chiropractic spinal adjustment, the doctor of chiropractic then begins a process of correcting the spinal damage. No painkillers, muscle relaxants, other drugs or medical procedures can do it. No surgery can do it. “Pinched” nerves (vertebral subluxations) will not go away by themselves. Anyone suffering from “pinched” nerves needs a proper chiropractic spinal analysis and spinal adjustment to relieve their body of vertebral subluxations-nothing else will do.

No matter what disease or condition you have, you can benefit from a healthy spine. Spinal health can be an important for your overall healing as proper nutrition. Are you and your family carrying the vertebral subluxation complex in your spines? Only a chiropractic spinal checkup can tell.

Among the many things contributing to your health: the quality of the air, food and water you take in; how you handle emotional stress; your inherited weaknesses and strengths; your use of drugs; exercise; and relaxation a healthy spine is absolutely essential. In some people it is a major factor and can make the difference between a life of health, strength and vitality or a life of disease, weakness, and disability.

Are You Popping Pills? Pt3

Are You Popping Pills? Pt3

spinecordWhat is Vertebral Subluxation?

A subluxation is often a painless condition that can cause much serious damage if it is not detected and corrected. Since the nerves control and regulate the body, any interference to nerve health can cause widespread effects.
It’s caused by stress of all kinds – physical stress such as falls, accidents, sleeping in a bad position, poor posture, sitting all day; chemical stress such as pollution, chemicals in your food and any other stress that weakens you.
Subluxations can damage your nervous system, and affect your brain and internal organs.
Chiropractors spend four years of intense study learning how to analyze spines in order to locate and correct vertebral subluxations.

The World’s Greatest Drugstore

The greatest drugstore in the world is your own marvelous body. It manufactures every medicine you need antibiotics; insulin; painkillers; chemicals to alter your blood pressure, heartbeat, moods; hormones to regular your digestion, growth, blood chemistry; and hundreds of other drugs, many of which science has yet to discover. They’re all there inside of you, if your body is working right.

And your marvelous internal drugstore gives you the right amount of medication, at the right time, all the time, without paying extra for prescription.

Correcting Subluxations
When chiropractors correct vertebral subluxations they help turn on your natural, internal ‘drugstore.’ Correction vertebral subluxations turns on your body’s natural healing ability without side effects, adverse reactions or drug dependency.

Going to a chiropractor may do more for someone’s internal chemical health than all the medicines in all the drugstore in the world. The next time you see someone living on medication, will you tell them about their internal drugstore? Will you tell them about chiropractic?

Postscript
No matter what disease or condition you have, you can benefit from a healthy spine. Spinal health can be as important for your overall healing as proper nutrition. Are you and your family caring the vertebral sublimation complex in your spines? Only a chiropractor spinal checkup can tell.
Among the many things contributing to your health: the quality of the air, food and water you take in; how you handle emotional stress; your inherited weaknesses and strengths; your use of drugs; exercise; and relation- a healthy spine is absolutely essential. Are You Popping Pills? Pt2

Are You Popping Pills ?

Are You Popping Pills ?

Does This Spell Health To You?
Do drugs correct the cause of your problems or do they just temporarily relieve your symptoms? The fact is if drugs truly corrected your health problems then you’d only have to take them once. But as soon as their effects wear off, the symptoms return and isn’t it back to the pill bottles? Is that any way to go through life?

Do Drugs Make You Healthy?
If drugs make you healthy then those taking the most of them should be the healthiest of us all, but isn’t it true that such people are often the sickest?
And what about the side effects? Sometimes side effects cause more problems than the original condition for which they were taken. Sometimes the drugs cause physical or psychological dependence on them. Sometimes they cause disease and sickness. Sometimes they even cause death. And all the time they take us away from depending on our natural healing ability and make us dependent on artificial supports.

Drugs Lie
The symptoms the drugs are covering up are often warning signals telling your that something is wrong with your body. By constantly covering up the symptoms with medicines you may be ignoring what your body is telling you. While you take medicines to feel better your healthy may continue to deteriorate, and if it does you may start to take more powerful medicines to continue to hide the warning symptoms your body is giving you.
Drugs lie to you. They take attention away from correcting the real problem: the cause of the illness.

Alternatives To Drugs?
Is there an alternative to drug use? Chiropractic teaches us that true health does not come from a pill, a lotions, a potion or some other chemical concoction. True health comes from within. Health is the expression of the body functioning properly.
Chiropractors correct a very common condition that interferes with your body function causing it to weaken and become susceptible to disease and malfunction. That condition is called a vertebral subluxation.
